Lindsay Hyde, a senior at Southwest Miami High School, recently received a $1,900 grant from the Women's Fund of Miami-Dade County for her Strong Women, Strong Girls community service project. The Strong Women, Strong Girls project is a student founded and coordinated community service project designed to provide elementary school age girls with concrete skills for success. The project utilizes the study of contemporary and historic female role models, combined with lessons designed around the Project's 10 "Countdown to Success" goals, to help young girls acquire the fundamentals necessary for them to become strong and successful women. The project currently is working with students at Cypress Elementary School through the after school program. Additionally, Hyde, project founder and coordinator, was invited to present a Critical Thinking and Analytical Skills workshop at the Girl Scout Council of Tropical Florida's "Daisy/Brownie Winterfest." After a short women's history lesson on female astronaut Sally Ride and an introduction to critical thinking, approximately 150 Daisies and Brownies utilized their critical thinking and team work skills to build space shuttles utilizing only the clean trash materials (paper towel rolls, foam, plastic bottle caps, packing materials, etc.) provided by the Strong Women, Strong Girls project. The Strong Women, Strong Girls project is scheduled to continue through April 2000. For more information, contact Lindsay Hyde, project coordinator, at 305-274-7912 or by fax at 305-274-3506.
