The National Transportation Safety Board and Daimler Chrysler announced that the car company's dealerships will offer free safety checks to make sure child car seats are properly attached to vehicles. Eight out of 10 children are secured improperly in their car seats or sit in seats that aren't properly secured in the vehicle. It's become the No. 1 highway safety problem for children in this country. There are five Daimler-Chrysler dealerships in South Florida offering free checkups. You can call Neighbors 4 Neighbors at 305-597-4404 to get the location nearest you. AOL FYI Kendall residents Juan and Elizabeth Cofino have filed a class action lawsuit against AOL. Their suit is similar to several others filed across the country. It charges that AOL's new software illegally changes Internet settings to disable competing Web programs on their computer. AOL says that feature is fully disclosed during the software installation and insists that the company is doing nothing wrong. Similar charges have been made against other software makers whose programs wipe out competing software on home computers. NOW THAT'S RICH! Four local travel companies will be offering refunds to consumers claiming they were given bogus offers about free trips to Florida. Robin Leach is the spokesman for National Travel Services and Ramada Plaza Resorts. His involvement in the case is still being investigated. WINDSTORM WIND-DOWN The increase affects nearly half a million Florida homeowners and could cause rate hikes as much as 268 percent in parts of Miami-Dade County. NEW AIRLINE FLYING HIGH Initially, the airline will operate three daily round-trips from Ft. Lauderdale, which is a more cost-efficient departure point than Miami. The airline provides snacks, but not full meals. They'll also offer in-flight television for an additional $5. EXTRA ENERGIZER The new batteries will cost about $4.59 for a four pack of AA size, about a dollar more than current alkaline Energizers. The product will hit store shelves this summer.
