Sons of American Revolution to sponsor oration contest |

High school sophomores, juniors or seniors during the 1999-2000 school year are invited to enter the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution Joseph S. Rumbaugh Historical Oration Contest. This contest is sponsored by the Miami Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution and is open to students attending public, parochial, private or accredited home schools in Miami-Dade County. A $3,000 first prize and Olympic-size medal is awarded to the winner of the national contest. In addition, a $1,000 U.S. Savings Bond first prize will be awarded to the winner of the state contest, and $500 first prize and bronze Good Citizenship Medal will be awarded to the winner of the chapter contest. The contest is for an original oration of not less than five minutes nor more than six minutes, given from memory and without the use of notes or any kind of props. The subject for the oration shall deal with an event, a personality or a document, pertaining to the Revolutionary War, showing the relationship it bears to America today. Orations will be judged for composition, delivery, logic, significance, general excellence and time allocated for delivery. The entry deadline for this contest is Mar. 16. Entries postmarked after that date will not be accepted. Rules and other information about the contest can be obtained by sending a No. 10 (business size) self-addressed stamped envelope to: Saul M.
