The Florida Police Benevolent Association tapped State Rep. John Cosgrove for its 1999 Distinguished Legislator Award. The PBA named Cosgrove for the honor because of his "outstanding leadership in the Florida legislature with respect to criminal justice issues." The PBA called Cosgrove "an untiring advocate for Florida's law enforcement community and the safety of our citizens," and said he was a friend to the PBA, its 30,000 members and all law enforcement officers in the state. Cosgrove, first elected to the Florida House of representatives in 1981 and in office for 18 years, said he was humble and grateful to receive the award. "I understand the needs of the law enforcement community and have always tried to do what was best for it during every legislative session in which I have served," Cosgrove said. "Those who are involved in law enforcement are to be truly commended for their willingness to serve the public by protecting it from the very worst elements of society." Cosgrove will depart the legislature in November because of Florida's term limits law and plans to run for state treasurer and insurance commissioner. |
