Gulliver students nominated for Wendy's Heisman Award

BY LISA SHAHEEN

Two Gulliver Preparatory students recently were nominated for the prestigious Wendy's 1999 High School Heisman Award. Seniors Kimberli Barred and Jordan Harrison were nominated by the Gulliver Preparatory faculty for their scholastic and athletic achievements along with their outstanding contribution to the community.

Jordan Harrison is a member of both the cross-country and track and field teams. Last year, he led his cross-country team to win the state championships and his track and field team placed second in the state finals.

Academically, Harrison is an outstanding student and in 1998 he was awarded the Headmaster GPA Award.

"Being nominated for the Wendy's High School Heisman Award is the biggest honor I have ever received. I am proud to be recognized for my academic and athletic achievements," Harrison said.

In addition to his active life in school, Harrison is active in the community. He is the current president of the Health Interested Students of America (HISA) Club and the secretary of the Zonta Club. Both organizations host fundraising events and donate many hours of community service for worthy causes.

An overachiever, Harrison donates more than 30 community service hours per year, well above the required amount for graduation.

"Giving back to the community is an important aspect of my life. I enjoy my community activities and I plan to continue them well into adulthood," Harrison said.

Harrison is currently applying to several colleges and hopes to study biology.

Kimberli Barrett also was nominated for the Wendy's High School Heisman Award. Barrett led the girl's track and field team to the district championships last season.

"She is a coach's dream," said Steve Callaway, Gulliver's track and field coach. "She always strives to be her best and she is a leader by example."

A member of the cross country and track and fields teams since her freshmen year, she has racked up a number of titles including, 1997 District Champion, 1997 State and All County First Team, 1998 Most Valuable Player Division 3A State Championships, Golden South's High School Track and Field Classic Shot Put Champion and a National Scholastic Track and Field Outdoor Shot Put finalist.

An outstanding scholar as well as a gifted athlete, Barred is a member of the National Honor Society and is active in several school clubs and organizations. She donates countless hours to community service projects such as the Junior Orange Bowl Sports Ability Games, Hoop It Up Basketball Tournament, Air It Out Football Tournament and the South Florida Plant Fair.

Barred is applying to several colleges, many of which are looking to recruit her for their track and field teams. She plans to study business or journalism.
